- Worn or Failed Mortar Joints: Traditional lime mortar gradually weathers with age. Once joints become cracked, loose, porous, or start falling away, rainwater can penetrate deeper into the brickwork. Repointing damaged areas with a compatible lime mortar can help restore the wall’s ability to shed moisture while still allowing it to breathe.
- Cement Mortar Used on Older Brickwork: Modern cement mortar is much harder and less breathable than traditional lime mortar. When used to repoint softer heritage bricks, it can trap moisture within the wall instead of allowing it to evaporate naturally.
